About Patrick Hamilton

Patrick Hamilton (1974, Belgium) is a Chilean contemporary artist whose work critically examines the visual language of power, consumption, and urban modernity. Currently living between Madrid and Santiago de Chile, Hamilton develops a practice that engages with systems of economic circulation, architectural structures, and the symbolic frameworks that shape contemporary society.

Grounded in conceptual research, his work often draws from everyday materials and visual codes associated with advertising, construction, and global commerce. Through repetition, accumulation, and geometric rigor, he constructs compositions that oscillate between minimalism and political commentary. His practice reflects on how neoliberal economies imprint themselves onto collective consciousness, transforming abstract financial structures into tangible aesthetic experiences. Beneath their formal precision, his works reveal tensions between order and control, desire and alienation.

Hamilton’s artistic process frequently involves the recontextualization of industrial and commercial materials, transforming them into sculptural and pictorial surfaces that question systems of value and representation. By appropriating visual strategies from corporate and architectural environments, he creates works that are both seductive and critical, inviting viewers to confront the infrastructures—visible and invisible—that govern contemporary life.

His work has been widely exhibited in Latin America, the United States, and Europe, including presentations at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), the Guggenheim Foundation (New York), DKM Museum (Duisburg), The Bronx Museum of the Arts (New York), Matucana 100 (Santiago de Chile), and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wifredo Lam (Havana), among others. In 2007, he received the Guggenheim Fellowship awarded by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and in 2006 he was artist-in-residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York.

Hamilton has also participated in major international biennials, including the Venice Biennale (55th edition), the São Paulo Biennial, the Havana Biennial, and the Prague Biennial, reinforcing his position within global contemporary art discourse.

His works form part of numerous public and private collections, including the Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), CA2M (Madrid), CGAC (Santiago de Compostela), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago (MAC), MOLAA (Long Beach), El Museo del Barrio (New York), and the National Museum of Fine Arts (Santiago de Chile), among others.

Through a practice that merges formal austerity with socio-political inquiry, Patrick Hamilton constructs a critical mirror of contemporary capitalism- an artistic language that is at once analytical, poetic, and incisively relevant.
